I just really need to say this. So, hang on, we’re going for a ride.
Firstly, I’ll say this: I have always been a big fan of Jared Leto. Of his acting and of his music. I remember back in fourth grade watching the premiere of the music videos for A Beautiful Lie, The Kill, From Yesterday, etc. I have also seen My So-Called Life, Alexander, Requiem for a Dream, etc. 30 Seconds to Mars was/is one of those bands, for me, that helped me feel okay about listening to what I like. Because, back in third and fourth grade, listening to metal, or even rock, was not accepted in ANY way, shape, or form. Some hid it from everyone, expect my family (who I got the taste in music from), and hid all the concerts I went to. (Yes, I was in my first mosh pit in fourth grade.)
Now. I saw Dallas Buyers Club. And I saw it with my MOTHER and SISTER. And for those of you who have seen it know how awkward that could be. But I still loved it. Still saw it as such a powerful, needed movie. I remember when Jared first announced his role and explained his role. My first thought was “um…okay…this should be interesting.” But then, after thinking about it, I really didn’t know anyone more fitting for that role.
I have heard the hate surrounding Jared’s Oscar win, for multiple “offenses.” Firstly, I’ll get this one out of the way. There’s hate for him not mentioning trans people in his speech. Have you seen any of his other acceptance speeches for Rayon? This isn’t the first award he has won for Dallas Buyers Club. Not even close. I suggest you go watch those. Also, try winning one of the biggest awards of the night at the biggest awards show of the year. In front of millions of people. Maybe he was planning on saying something and it slipped his mind because of nervousness. I think anyone would be nervous in that position.
Another string of hate: The mentioning of AIDS victims and people who have felt injustice toward who they are and who they love (basically the last two lines of his speech.) This is taken way too far out of proportion. Nowhere in his speech did he say “I’ve mentioned the AIDS victims, now they are cured, so why all the hate? He was giving a tribute to them. And, frankly, if he hadn’t mentioned them, there would be hate yet again. It was a lose, lose situation.
Another: Jared playing a trans woman and not actually being trans. There have been other trans roles played by nontrans people. Maybe no trans woman wanted the role. You have to remember that. Casting directors can’t just go around casting whomever they want. The actor/actress has to have INTEREST in the film. And Jared did. Sorry…?
And to all other hate: Don’t post hate just because you dislike his music. Different aspects of him and his life, kay? Kay.
Maybe I’m biases because I am a fan of Jared’s but that’s just my take on this whole thing. I feel like everyone should be happy that he won an OSCAR for playing a trans woman. It’s a step in a good direction. A direction that this world needs. It’s progress.
But I am so incredibly proud and happy for Jared. It seems like just yesterday he was walking around with black hair with red tips and guyliner. I would have never expected this out of him. Even while reading his tweets during filming and his Instagram pictures, I never guessed the movie would have this big of an impact. But I’m sure as hell glad it did.
how many times do you think you’ve seen the same bird twice.
